Energy supply during competitions has always been a challenge for endurance athletes. Due to the intensive strain, the body needs energy, whereby consuming high amounts of carbohydrates during physical effort can result in slower gastric emptying and GI distressat.
In collaboration with numerous universities and top athletes, Maurten has developed a new method to drastically increase the amount of carbohydrates supplied through hydrogel technology without any side effects for digestion.
From a technical perspective, traditional gels are water and carbohydrates simply mixed into syrups, often containing added flavors and preservatives. The GEL 100 is completely different. It is a biopolymer matrix, filled with a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8:1). The hydrogel makes the absorption of up to 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour tolerable, because it encapsulates carbohydrates and salts and allows a rapid transport of nutrients into the intestines, where they are finally absorbed. Details of MAURTEN Gel 100 CAF 100 The GEL 100 CAF 100 contains 100 mg of caffeine – that’s the equivalent of 1,5 espressos – or one cup of brewed coffee. That’s a lot compared to many of the traditional gels out there. It delivers 25 grams of carbohydrates through a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8:1). It packs a high weight to energy ratio and doesn’t contain any added flavors, preservatives or colorants. Just like all of the Maurten products, it’s vegan-friendly.
Why caffeine?
Caffeine has been shown to promote alertness and reduce perceived effort and pain. These are properties that can be beneficial in sports performance. The GEL 100 CAF 100 can be used for building up caffeine levels – on its own, together with other caffeine sources, such as regular coffee – or to achieve sufficient caffeine levels during activity.
Amount of Carbohydrates
It is well known that bodies can make use of about 60 grams of ingested carbohydrates per hour, in the form of glucose or maltodextrin (glucose polymer). Using a 0.5:1 combination of fructose and glucose/maltodextrin, allows uptake of up to 90 grams per hour. More recent studies have shown that increased fructose content, above 0.5:1 enables an even higher uptake. The GEL 100 CAF 100 is based on a 0.8:1 fructose-to-glucose ratio. One serving contains 25 grams of carbohydrates.
MAURTEN Gel 100 CAF 100 - how to use: Developing a nutritional strategy for races or key sessions is complex. Everyone is different –and the caffeine absorption and metabolizing rate varies between individuals. There are two key factors that are important to take into account: 1) your body weight and 2) if you’re used to caffeine. Science suggests an intake of 3 mg of caffeine per kilogram body mass, to aid performance. But again, it’s highly individual.

Possible Applications of MAURTEN Drink Mix 160/320
Before the training/competition: Maurten can be used as a carboloader before competitions. A simple possibility is to drink two Drink Mix 160 or 1 drink mix 320 the day before the race.
During workout/competition: The amount of carbohydrates required depends on various factors. One of them is the duration of the exercise. When running or cycling for 60 minutes or less, the recommended intake is up to 40 Gramm carbohydrates at the beginning of physical exertion. For short workouts a Mix Drink 160 is therefore sufficient.
After the training/competition: After a workout, the body needs carbohydrates for effective recovery. A Dink Mix 160 can be taken within 30 minutes after the end of the session.
Maurten's recommended use: Mix the content of each sachet with 500 ml of water and shake well until dissolved. Be careful, you need to get the ratio right for the hydrogel technology to work. The mix is designed to be mixed with water with less than 40mg/L calcium content. Higher levels can affect how it's dissolved.
